How do I set up my a Microsoft Exchange Server for backup?

To back up your Exchange server, you have to prepare the Exchange environment, first.

Note: The steps described are related to the backup of a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, the steps may vary for other versions.

Check the following configurations to ensure an error free backup of your Microsoft Exchange server.

Note: All procedures described below must be performed on the Microsoft Exchange Server.

To turn off circular logging, proceed as follows::

  1. Start the Exchange Management Console on the Microsoft Exchange Server.
  2. In the console tree, expand Server Configuration.
  3. Click on Mailbox.
  4. In the workspace right-click the storage group for which you want to enable or disable circular logging.
  5. Click Properties.
    • The <Name of the storage group> Properties page dialog box will open.
  6. Clear the Enable circular logging check box.
  7. Click the OK button.

For the changes to the settings for circular logging to take effect, reboot the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service.

To check the availability of the services Microsoft Exchange Information Store and Volume Shadow Copy, proceed as follows:

  1. Start the Exchange Management Console on the Microsoft Exchange Server.
  2. Open the Services tab.
  3. In the list of all services, check if the status for the services of Microsoft Exchange Information Store and Volume Shadow Copy is Running.
  4. If not, select the service that is not running.
  5. Click the Start button.
  6. The necessary services are available.

To set Vssadmin for the Writer, proceed as follows:

  1. Open the Command Prompt window.
  2. Enter the command vssadmin list writers.
  3. Confirm the entry with ENTER.
  4. The Writers are configured. Check for Microsoft Exchange Writer, whether state: stable and Last error: No error.

To check whether all databases are mounted, proceed as follows:

  1. Start the Exchange Management Console on the Microsoft Exchange Server.
  2. In the console tree, expand Server Configuration | Mailbox.
  3. Open the Settings for each database via the context menu.
  4. If it says Dismount Store, the database is mounted.
